CertificationGuidelines for property certification were established by Douglas Tallamy, author of Bringing Nature Home and The Nature of Oaks. Working with Doug, we agreed that we wanted our certification to recognize property owners for those native plants (trees, shrubs, flowers and grasses) that supported significant numbers of Lepidoptera (caterpillar and moth) larvae. Because oak trees support high numbers of larvae, if a property owner has even a single oak tree, it will qualify for certification. Without any oak trees, a property owner must have a collection of lepidoptera supporting native flora to qualify.
