Habitat Discovery Center

Our Habitat Discovery Center is located in Omena, Michigan, and is adjacent to a 44-acre private conservation effort, Charter Sanctuary, which has hosted more than sixty nesting species. A hundred additional species use the property for foraging during migration.

A Wildflower a Day

Our film is a seasonal exploration of native plants in response to the challenge to locate, identify, and photograph a different wildflower in bloom each day, from mid April through mid September.

Sleeping Bear Birding Trail

Explore dozens of birding locations throughout Michigan's Sleeping Bear region. The trail spans an important migratory flyway and thousands of public acres along or near the Lake Michigan coastline and Grand Traverse Bay.

The Power of One (often the power of a couple) was started as a regular feature in our newsletter, Habitat Happenings, published to give credit to those who improved their properties for birds and pollinators, purchased land in order to preserve good native habitat, or took other actions to aid birds.

On the Frying Pan

The Fryingpan River rises high on the west side of the Continental Divide, flowing out of the Elk Mountains and through the heart of the Hunter–Fryingpan Wilderness before bending north toward the Roaring Fork. Much of its upper course runs through steep, forested country shaped by ice, water, and long winters—quiet terrain where access is limited, distances are deceptive, and the land still dictates the terms of movement.

Restoring and Protecting Habitat

Certainly we can not expect everyone to be interested or concerned about this, nor can we expect to completely solve the problem within our lifetimes. But saving one bird species, saving one insect upon which that bird is dependent for breeding, saving one plant species that this insect in turn requires to breed, could be of immense value at some distant point in the future. This means that each step we take, each ally we connect with, each conversation we have about this with people can have positive results that we can not possibly foresee.
